We are so excited for summer! We will be spending a lot of time with our baby - at the beach, going on walks, and just hanging out at the house. It's so nice to have some time to recharge once the school year is done.
We will also both be teaching some summer school for a few weeks. Many other teachers we know work as summer school teachers, camp counselors, and tutors during their summer months. We have several resources that are very helpful for teaching during the summer. Summer School Getting to Know You has lots of writing activities to help students adjust to summer school. Summer School Games and Routines has suggestions for carpet time activities, as well as a couple art and Fourth of July resources. We also have a Summer School Bundle with both of these products.
We are getting ready to celebrate Earth Day in our class. It's so important to teach children the importance of caring for the planet!

One of the fun resources that we like to use is our Earth Day Poetry Packet. It has lots of fun acrostic poems for students to write and decorate. How will you celebrate Earth Day?
This year there were lots of visitors, including current students and their families, past students coming back to say hi, and potential future students for next year. Everyone seemed to enjoy seeing all of the student work on display, such as Very Hungry Caterpillar art projects and writing, spring tree paintings, math about me posters, and more.

We love using our "Open House Survival Kit" to make Open House flow smoothly. There are many different resources that help students reflect on their year and what they have accomplished. Students seem to really like creating their own maps of the classroom and planning out what parts of the classrooms they will show their visitors. The activities in this resource are simple but practical, so check it out if you need help getting ready for your Open House. Good luck!Joe and Alliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02071889291677559752noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3870020165675159778.post-24198808289861382782014-03-16T22:01:00.001-07:002014-03-16T22:03:55.771-07:00Leprechauns!!!Did any leprechauns visit your classroom for St. Patricks day? There were so many creative leprechaun traps this year. Students used l kinds of different materials for making them, and they went all out with their decorating. They used shamrocks, rainbows, and of course, gold to draw in the leprechauns.

Unfortunately, when it was all said and done, the leprechauns were just too sneaky. They managed to avoid getting caught by any of the traps. They also left a big mess and didn't clean any of it up! Pesky little buggers!
It has been a really helpful for students to practice generating ideas, which is an important step in the writing process. In Writers Workshop, students need to filter through all of their possible ideas and choose one "small moment" to focus on.
Some students seem to want to write about all of the ideas that they jot down in their notebooks, so it can take some practice for them to let go and just concentrate on one small moment.

A great thing about keeping all of the ideas in one place is that they are very accessible to students. Students love sharing about themselves, and these posters are great for letting them do that. The poster has fun fonts and clip art frames, and you could even enlarge them on a copy machine if you would like them to be larger.

Of course, the best thing about this resource is the price...FREE!
Here is our new Winter Acrostic Poetry Bundle. This bundle features three of our popular acrostic poem holiday products: Christmas Poetry Packet, New Year's Poetry Packet, and Valentine's Day Poetry Packet. Buying these products as a bundle is a great way to save some money on these products.

We recommend doing one or two acrostic poems with your class whole group so that students can see how to brainstorm words for their acrostic poems. After that, students will probably get the hang of acrostic poems and be able to write more acrostic poems independently. You might even like to put multiple poems together into packets for early finishers to work on. Happy writing!Joe and Alliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02071889291677559752noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3870020165675159778.post-31226277564534628082013-11-30T18:51:00.002-08:002013-11-30T18:51:28.389-08:00Cyber Monday Sale! It's that time of year! So today I set up this light system and showed it to my students when they walked in the door. "What do you think that this is?" I asked them. Then I had them write down their responses in their journals. You never know what first graders are going to say, and somehow a lot of my kids decided that we were going to keep a guinea pig underneath the light.

Later, I had to break the news to them that we were not going to have a guinea pig (sad faces), but we would have a new place to grow plants indoors (happy faces). We had a great time prepping the growing medium and planting the seeds. We have 18 different plants that we will be growing, from Easter Egg radishes to Chinese cabbage. After the seedlings germinate and outgrow their plugs, we will take them to the greenhouse to "harden off." Finally, we will transplant them into our garden planter box and eat some tasty veggies when it's all said and done. It should be a fun winter and fall! Maybe we will get a guinea pig in the spring

Our class had the fortunate opportunity to be a part of a sustainable energy event a few weeks ago. There were solar power displays, green building companies, and even an electric car show!

Classes from local elementary schools also displayed projects. Our first grade class presented our hydropower water wheels that we made. We showed how we could use water as a clean energy source, and talked about hydroelectric generators. I know, a lot for first grade, right? We had a great time at the event and learned a lot about helping the environment.

Before

Teaching can be stressful, and having a messy room seems make it a million times more stressful. Before the students came back to school this year, I did some major organizing. I got rid of a lot of old things in my cabinets that the previous teacher had left. It was really hard when my room kept getting messier from pulling out stuff from the depths of my storage space. However, when I finally got rid of it, it felt great! Also, I used a bunch of old storage tubs from a teacher who just retired (thanks Neal!). Then I labeled the tubs and stored seasonal items and various supplies in them when I was finished my room felt so much better. Now lets see how long I can keep it clean...
The highlight has definitely been a family trip to the island of Kauai. Beaches, pools, shaved ice, and beautiful sights everywhere. Summertime also means catching up on jobs around the house. This summer we took on the daunting task of painting our house by hand. It was a long process, but the end result was well worth it.

Soon we will be heading back to school again, but it sure is nice to recharge your batteries a little during the summer.

Teachers ask students to "pay attention" all the time. However, many students don't know what that means. This anchor chart is great because it encourages students to be actively involved in listening, rather than sitting back and passively listening to a speaker and not showing them that you are following along. Also, the anchor chart provides great social cues for students with special needs. The next time you ask your students to pay attention, don't forget about SLANT!

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Joe and Alliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02071889291677559752noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3870020165675159778.post-71361092442257497332013-06-12T17:45:00.002-07:002013-06-12T17:45:37.959-07:00Second Grade Common Core Math

This product has a similar feel to our original Surf Shack Summer Math for first grade. However, the concepts are more challenging, and include regrouping, expanded form, graphing, comparing, word problems, and more. There are also math tools, such as number lines, tens frames and 120 charts. It also has original beach art that kids love. Come ride the math wave at the surf shack!

As sellers on TpT and Teacher's Notebook, Pinterest is a great way to new materials to others. Many of you know that collaborative pinning boards are good places for posting products for others to see.

There are many collaborative boards that we belong to, and it's neat to see all of the cool items that get shared. We recently decided to start our own collaborative Pinterest boards.

The first one is called "Speech an Special Ed." It's not just for speech pathologists and special education teachers, it's for ANYONE who has resources or ideas relating to these areas.

The other board is called "Education and Technology." As the name suggests, it's a board for pinning products about all things related to technology.

Follow these Pinterest boards if you want to see the cool material that is being pinned. If you would like to join as a collaborative pinner, just leave your Pinterest URL in the comments section below :)Joe and Alliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02071889291677559752noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3870020165675159778.post-31899517700637213972013-05-27T10:51:00.002-07:002013-05-27T10:51:27.180-07:00Flash Freebie! We are having our first flash freebie!
